I used to be quite an active runner in my CCA and secondary school. It was not until I was secondary 3 that I was diagnosed with a brain tumour.
The symptoms of the tumour were not significant and I did not realise the severity of the issue until I visited the doctor. I only faced tremors in my right arm which I attributed to the physical training I was involved in at that time.
Upon the diagnosis, I was admitted into the hospital and prepared for surgery. A previous MRI scan had shown a tumour in the middle of my brain, sitting on the central nervous system which caused damage to some of the nerves and hence, the tremors. The surgery was a biopsy to test the cells in the tumour and luckily, it was benign.
After the surgery, I was arranged for 25 sessions of radiotherapy. That was when I started vomitting and losing hair and feeling weak. The side effects would have been more torturous if not for the chinese medicine I had consumed during that period. I took 25 capsules a day and it greatly reduced my vomitting. Sleeping was the best escape for me when I underwent radiotherapy and one of the side effects was fatigue. I took little food which had to be soupy or wet for me to be able to swallow it.
After the radiotherapy, the area where my tumour used to be is now a dark space on the scan reports. It was successful, but it might have caused more permanent damage to my nerves. My hand still shook as violently.
I tried acupuncture to help repair the nerves. I underwent over 20 sessions with 8 needles poked into me each time with electricity passed through them. This worked and I am better able to control my hand.
I am thankful for the care and corcern offered to me by my friends, teachers and doctors. I am especially grateful to my parents for being beside me in my battle for health. The lessons I have taken away from this experience are self belief, perseverance and resilience and love for others. My brother once told me that God doesn't put you through what He thinks you cannot withstand. Taking the treatment as a test gave me strength in moving forward. The people around me have shown me that love supports, and while I was thinking I had it worst, I could see agony in the eyes of my family and friends, who wanted to help but did not know how. This gave me courage in facing the illness for I did not want my physical pain to cause emotional agony to those around me. Nick Vujicic was a motivational figure that helped me in my battle.
Managing my academics during that time was hard, but I am proud to say that I have achieved results for my A levels which have surpassed my expectations.
